The first time I saw Lau Sum was in a Yuen Long inter-school basketball elimination tournament. He dribbled the ball at high speed on the court, which made people feel excited. Our basketball team members come from different background, and thus it is not easy for the group to establish a sense of belonging. When Lau Sum first joined, we also worried that he would assert his influence to the team. With good skills, physical strength and a strong sense of pride, he would easily losing his temper, often making the atmosphere tense. After joining the Life Growth Group for more than a year, Lau Sum gradually has become gentle, and he would encourage his teammates from time to time. In the conversation, he said that he is confused about the path ahead, he only likes to play basketball. His dream is to be a basketball coach. Lau Sum recently entered successfully the Diploma program in Fitness and Sports of the Vocational Training Council taking a big step towards his goal of becoming a basketball coach.

The Community Youth Centre in Kam Tin, Yuen Long provides a gathering space for neighbours, establishing a platform for youth to explore the past, present, and future of the region, reimagining the possibilities of life. Through initiatives like the “Pay-it-forward Community Café,” character basketball training, and community bonding activities, we promote youth involvement in community development, fostering their sense of belonging and responsibility towards the local area.
